Once you have the right-sized wig, now you can begin preparing your hair for wig application. It’s important to have clean hair before wearing your wig. Make sure you have properly washed and dried your hair before you apply your wig. Wearing a wig with clean hair helps keep your wig clean and helps prevent your hair from drying out.
Once you have clean and dry hair, be sure to brush out your hair. Make sure there are no tangles or knots. Otherwise, your hair will be hard to braid later if it’s full of tangles. Once your hair is all brushed out and tangle free, now you can begin the process for wig application.

FAQs: How to Wear a Wig with Long Hair

Can I wear a wig if I have very long hair?

Yes! You’ll need to braid your hair into two or more sections and tuck it under a wig cap. Make sure your hair is flat against the head to keep the wig from bubbling.

How do I know if a wig will fit securely?

There are a couple things you can do to make sure your wig fits securely. If your wig has these features, you can use the adjustable tabs or velcro closures to customize the fit. You can also use wig tape or adhesive to keep your wig in place. You can even take bobby pins and pin the wig to your hair. Your wig should never feel too tight or too loose. If your wig is slipping, that means it's not tight enough.

Will wearing a wig damage my natural hair?

No. Overall, wigs will not damage your natural hair. There are some things you can do, too, to help keep your scalp and hair healthy while you wear a wig.

  • Have a Regular Hair Care Routine - make sure you have clean and dry hair before putting on your wig. Having oily hair can make your scalp feel damp if your wig gets hot. This can create moisture, which is unhealthy for your hair and could make your wig smelly.

  • Increase the gap between your hair and wig - Wearing a wig cap or liner can help protect your hair from sweat build up and any friction between your hair and the wig that can cause discomfort.

  • Choose the Right Wig Size - It is important to have the correct size wig. A wig that is too tight may pull on your hair, which can cause hair thinning and balding.

  • Avoid Creating Tension On Your Scalp - When you braid your hair, avoid creating tight braids. This can create tension on the scalp and pull on the hairline. The tight braids can lead to hair breakage and loss.

  • Give Your Hair a Break - It’s important to let your scalp breathe. If you want to keep your head covered, try other options like head wraps or hats.
