Synthetic Hair Wigs FAQs

What is a synthetic wig?

Synthetic wigs are made with synthetic fibers that are often vibrantly colored and shiny. Brands like Jon Renau and Raquel Welch use high quality synthetic fiber to give the appearance of bio hair. Some wigs are even made with a heat friendly synthetic fiber, so you can style the hair with heat tools. (Make sure it’s a heat-friendly wig!)

Can you make synthetic wigs look natural?

Synthetic wigs have come a long way in the last few decades. The synthetic fibers often mimic the look and feel of bio hair. However, if you’re worried your synthetic wig looks too shiny or fake, here are a couple tricks:

  • When you take the wig out of the box, shake the wig around. This will help activate the hair and fluff it out.
  • Try spraying the hair with dry shampoo. This will take out the shine and make the fibers resemble natural hair.

How long should a synthetic wig last?

Synthetic wigs tend to last 3-6 months. Lifespan depends on how often you wear your wigs, how often you style it, and how often you wash it.  A good rule of thumb is to wash your wig after 7-10 days of use. When washing your wig, use shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for synthetic wigs. If your synthetic wig is not heat friendly, using heat styling tools can damage the hair.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic wigs?

There are many advantages to synthetic wigs:

  • They are generally cheaper than human hair wigs, which is great if you’re new to wigs or on a budget.
  • Synthetic wigs feel lightweight and the hair is less dense than human hair wigs, which is perfect for summer or if you live in a hotter climate.
  • They require less maintenance and styling. Synthetic wigs come out of the box practically ready to wear after a quick shake. The synthetic fibers generally retain their style after you wash and dry it, so you will not have to worry about styling it as often as you would with a human hair wig.
  • Since synthetic wigs hold their style, you will not have to worry about the hair falling down or frizzing from the weather.
  • If your synthetic wig is heat friendly, you can still use heat tools to style the hair.

There are a few disadvantages to synthetic wigs:

  • They don’t last as long as human hair wigs with only a lifespan of 3-6 months.
  • Synthetic hair is not always heat friendly (unless specified by the manufacturer). The synthetic fiber will frizz or fray if heat is used.
  • The hair can look too shiny, which may make the wig look fake.

Can I use heat styling tools on synthetic hair wigs?

Yes and no. It all depends on what your synthetic hair wig is made out of. You can use heat tools on synthetic hair, but you have to make sure it’s made with a heat friendly synthetic fiber. Otherwise, you’ll damage the wig.
