Wigs for Black Women FAQs

What is the most natural looking wig type?

There are many different types of natural-looking types. Check out wigs with these features to find one that looks the most realistic:

  • Lace front wigs give you a natural hairline because the hairs are hand knotted into the sheer lace material that runs across the top front of the wig. Depending on the style, wigs with lace fronts can vary from stretching across the temples to extending to the ears.
  • Synthetic wigs are designed to mimic the look, feel, and movement of natural hair.
  • Human hair wigs are crafted with bio hair, so they’ll feel like your own hair.
  • Hand tied wigs are a great option if you have a sensitive scalp. The individual hairs are tied by hand into the cap to create the appearance of hair growth.
  • Monofilament wigs refer to the see-through mesh fabric that allows the color of your own scalp to show through the fibers tied to the top of the wig. The hair is either sewn or tied in sections into the top portion of the cap. This allows each of the tied hair to be parted or brushed in any direction.

What are the easiest wigs to wear?

Wigs that are easiest to wear will be synthetic wigs. They retain their style and require minimal maintenance. Most synthetic wigs come out of the box ready to wear, so all you have to do is shake out the wig, put it on, and go!

Can you wear a wig over your natural hair?

  • Yes, you can wear a wig over your natural hair. You’ll need to prepare your hair first. The goal is to distribute the bulk of your hair, so the wig lies flat over the top. There are three methods you can use: the braid method, wrap method, and ponytail method.
  • The braid method is great if you have longer or thick hair. Separate your hair and put it into two braids. (You can also use more braids, if needed). Wrap them around your head and secure the braids with bobby pins.
  • If you have shorter hair, you may want to try the wrap method. Take your hair and twist it up in the back. Then, secure your hair with bobby pins or clips to keep it in place.
  • You may have seen some people use the ponytail method when preparing their hair for a wig. Make sure your hair is as flat against the skull as possible to eliminate any bulges or lumps. This method works best if you have thinner hair.
  • Once you’re done preparing your hair, tuck up underneath a wig to make sure the hair stays in place and doesn’t peek out from underneath your wig.

What type of wig can you wear everyday?

It all depends on preference and how much time you want to put into your wig. If you want a wig with minimal styling, get a synthetic wig. If you do not mind putting in more time with your wig, get a human hair wig.

What is a comfortable wig?

The most comfortable wig to wear depends on your lifestyle and preference in materials. Here are some example of the most comfortable wig to wear:

  • If you have a sensitive scalp, double monofilament tops and hand tied wigs are good options.
  • Lace cap wigs are where the hair is sewn or hand tied into the lace material.
  • Wigs with basic cap construction are designed by sewing sections of hair, also known as wefts, into a thin elastic material. The open spacing around the wefts allows air to pass through for a breathable style.
  • To help protect your scalp from your wig, consider wearing a wig cap or liner.
