Will wearing a wig help with Trichotillomania?

march 28, 2023

What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania, or “trich” for short, is a condition that compels people to pull out their own hair. It can affect different parts of the body like the head, eyebrows and eyelashes. Depending on the severity, it can lead to bald patches, which can be uncomfortable to hide.

How Wigs Can Possibly Help

You might find it helpful to wear a wig for a few different reasons…
  • It can hide your hair loss and help boost your confidence

  • You may have less of an urge to pull your hair because of the change in sensation

  • Pulling hair from your wig doesn’t cause damage to your natural hair or scalp

Oftentimes your scalp may be sensitive from hair pulling so we recommend wigs with softer bases such as 100% hand-tied and monofilament wigs. Wearing a bamboo wig liner can also help.
Wigs can be an empowering tool when dealing with the physical effects of Trichotillomania. Finding understanding and support is just as important– we recommend joining support groups where you can link up with others who know what you’re going through and may also have great advice on products or treatments you might like to try.
