Tips for Wearing a Wig While Exercising

Secure your wig. For a firm hold, use wig tape or glue. (Please Note: Use with caution. The adhesive may release due to sweat.) You can also wear Amy Gibson’s WigSecure to help prevent slippage. If you still have bio hair, you can use clips to help stabilize your wig. Avoid putting the clips into any wefts or knots as you can damage the cap.

Choose a short wig. Not only do shorter styles help keep the hairs out of your face but it’s also cooler for intense workouts.

Designate a gym wig. Since workouts make you sweat, the wig you wear will need to be washed more frequently. It's best to have a designated gym wig you don't mind subjecting to some wear and tear.

Opt for a synthetic wig. Synthetic wigs are great for working out. The fibers are lighter weight than human hair, so your wig won’t feel as heavy on your head. If you’re doing your workouts outside, the synthetic fibers will maintain their style without frizzing or falling down. You’ll always have fabulous hair while working out.

Accessorize. If you prefer longer hairstyles, we suggest accessories like barrettes, hairbands, headbands, or hair clips to help keep your hair under control. Styling options like a low ponytail or braid also work beautifully. Low hairstyles help prevent the wefts from showing unless your wig is hand tied.

Opt for a Basic Cap or Hand Tied wig. Choosing either cap option is based on your preference. Both basic cap and hand tied wigs are breathable and cool to wear. Basic caps have open wefts that allow air to flow directly to your scalp for a cooler fit. Hand tied caps are great for sensitive scalps and those looking for a little more comfort in their workouts. The hairs are individually tied into the cap to help prevent skin irritation. Plus, hand tied caps have stretch ease, so they can comfortably fit your head shape.

Try a half wig. If you want something more breathable, consider getting a half wig. It’s a hair addition intended to be worn under hats. These styles are open at the top and can be paired with your hat of choice. Plus, it’ll help keep the sun out of your eyes if you’re outdoors.

Wash your wig. While we recommend washing your wig every 6-8 wears, you should wash your wig more frequently if you’re sweating in it. Use shampoo and conditioner that is specially formulated for your wig’s hair fiber type. Pro Tip: To help protect your wig from sweat and oils, you can wear Headline It’s No Sweat Liner. This product is designed to absorb and wick away moisture to help keep your wig fresh.

Consider a beanie or a wrap. If wearing a wig is uncomfortable while you work out, you can wear a headcover or cap to help keep your head cool. Jon Renau’s Softie is a great option because it's made with viscose from bamboo for supreme softness and breathability.

Take breaks when needed. If you start feeling overheated or need a break, don’t hesitate to step outside or visit the restroom to briefly remove your wig and let your scalp breathe for a refreshing cooldown. Please Note: Every person has a different heat tolerance level and what may work for one person may not work for another.
